The use of self is a powerful therapeutic tool that enables Helping Professionals to integrate aspects of personality, belief system, relational skills, and personal experience into the helping relationship and contribute to the well-being of their clients. This workshop focuses on the philosophy and premises of POTT, putting the theory into practice and learning how to use the ‘Self’ in connecting, assessing, and intervening with clients. Harry Aponte’s observations of his use of self will be another highlight of this 2-day workshop.

  1. Understand the Person of the Therapist Training (POTT) Model for the intentional use of self in therapy;
  2. Become familiar with studies on the effects of POTT on the clinical and personal domains of the therapist;
  3. Learn how to transform themselves to use their “self” effectively in therapy;
  4. Practice how to use their selves for connecting, assessing, and intervening with clients.

Teaching Strategies

  • Lectures and presentations;
  • Role plays, written exercises, and case supervision.
