Working On Emotional Escalation In High-Conflictual Relationships

Dr. Wentao Chao, Professor, National Taipei University of Education, Taiwan has been practicing couples and family therapy for over 20 years, and provides couple and family therapy training in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Malaysia. He holds a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy (University of Hong Kong) and an
M.A. in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling (Sonoma State University, U.S.A.). He is:

  • A Counseling psychologist (License, Taiwan)
  • The President (2015/7~2018/6) and council member of the Association of Couple and Family Therapy in Taiwan,
  • A Marriage and family counselor (certificate) and council member, Taiwan Association for Marriage and Family Counseling,
  • A Fellow member, Asian Academy of Family Therapy (AAFT)

SYNOPSIS

Many therapists find it challenging when their clients get agitated during the counselling process. To couple and family therapists, this scenario is nevertheless inevitable, requiring proper training and preparation for it. This workshop addresses factors that might lead to emotional escalation and high intensity in the therapy process, and how therapists can deal with it therapeutically, both for beginners and for seniors. Ways that therapist can apply to calm themselves down during therapy process will also be introduced and practiced.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This workshop will support the development new and experienced staff who are working with couples in conflictual relationships and need more in-depth content to better manage their cases.

OBJECTIVES: 

  • Systemic understanding
  • Verbal, emotional, psychological violence, harm in relationships and the corresponding emotional escalation
  • Helping workers be better at engaging or having conversations with clients to ensure their safety
  • Attending to clients coming for therapy by choice and clients who are mandated to attend
  • PPOs that involve kids and domestic violence

  • Live case consultation demonstrating theory;
