CONSULTATION FOR PRACTITIONERS
This service aims to advance social service practitioners in terms of their theoretical knowledge and counselling skills, so that they may gain greater competence to better serve their clients. The other important focus of the consultation is to increase the practitioners’ reflexivity so that they can better use their awareness and its impact on their clinical practice. Clinical consultation is conducted in individual and/ or group format for the practitioners from the social services, hospitals or mental health agencies.
As consultants who adopt systemic ideas and practices in consultation, the goals of consultation are to explore the difficulties and resources of the different systems, e.g. practitioners, organisations and the people they serve, so that there can be helpful differences. Together with the practitioners, we collaboratively determine the desired learning goals and growth that they seek for their clinical work and professional identity.
The usual modalities for consultation are: ‘live’ supervision, video/ audio taped supervision and case discussion. The consultation can be conducted in an individual and agency-based setting.
For consultation sessions where interaction with clients will be observed, the Consultees are to inform and seek the client’s consent on the observation by the Consultant.
All issues explored during the consultation session will be kept confidential unless there are concerns related to safety and/or professional ethics, where the Consultant considers it necessary for the matter to be raised with the Consultee (individual/agency/organization)
The consultation hours can be recognised by professional associations for registration of membership to be clinical members and supervisors, e.g. Singapore Association of Counsellors.
